Do You Really Want A Family Dog?

by:
Kelly Marshall

When you and your family are considering the idea of getting a dog as a pet, you need to know whether you really want a family dog. Wanting a family dog means more than getting a family dog. It means much, much more than that. It means that you and your family will be including another family member, one of the four-footed furry kinds. One that will have its own particular characteristics, likes, dislikes vices and virtues. It will also come with its own specific needs and requirements. Before you can get a family dog, you really need to learn more about the kind of dog you plan to introduce into your family.

You are Responsible for Your Family and Your Dog

It is your responsibility as a parent to do the best you can, to choose the dog breed that is best suited for your family and home. It is also your responsibility to ensure the health and safety of your family as well as your family dog. Before making such a decision you need to know if every member of your family is receptive to having a dog for a pet. You also need to ensure that each member of your family will do his or her best to be a good dog owner. Nothing is worse than for a dog to come into your family, and then find that any member of your home is abusing the dog.

Equally as bad, is that of making the wrong choice of dog breed to include in your family and home. You want to choose a dog that will be tolerant and patient with any children in the household as well as any neighborhood children. The best means of doing so is by doing some research into the types of dogs that interest you. Each dog breed is different; you need to know the various characteristics of any dog you choose. Find out what type of temperament the breed has as well as any health issues and health requirements they may have.

Dogs need proper Dog Care and Attention

Just like any other member of your household, regardless of his or her age, a family dog will require care and attention. If you and your family do not give your family dog proper dog care, the dog can become sick. It is essential that when you take on the responsibility of being a dog owner that you do everything possible to give your dog the best of dog care. If you and your family do not give your dog, plenty of attention the dog will become lonely and depressed. A dog that becomes lonely and depressed can get into a lot of trouble when it acts out to try to gain your attention and presence.

As you can see, getting a family dog is much different from simply having a family dog. As a parent, you are responsible for the safety and health of your family and your dog. You need to make sure that the dog gets the proper dog care and attention it needs and deserves.
